Drug & Alcohol Policy
Construction work is safety-critical. Being fit for work protects you, your colleagues and the residents whose homes we work in.
1. The rules
- Nobody may work, drive a company vehicle or operate equipment while under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or psychoactive substances
- No alcohol or drugs on site, in residents’ homes or in company vehicles
- Anyone who appears unfit for work will be stood down immediately and not allowed to drive
- The same rules apply to all subcontractors and their workers
2. Prescribed and over-the-counter medication
If you are taking medication that may cause drowsiness or affect your ability to work safely, you must tell your supervisor before starting work. This will be kept confidential, and we will adjust duties where needed.
3. Testing
We may carry out testing for cause (after an incident or where there is reasonable suspicion) and where a client or site requires it. Refusing a test will be treated as a positive result.
4. Support
We want people to ask for help. Anyone who tells us about a drug or alcohol problem before it causes an incident will be treated confidentially and supported to get help, for example through their GP. This does not apply after an incident or a failed test.
5. Breaches and review
Breaches will be dealt with under our disciplinary procedure, or by removing the subcontractor from site. This policy is reviewed annually by the Director.
